Boy, 13, found wandering by the road
12:16pm Fri 5th Sep 08:: written by Alastair Beach
An Afghan teenager who was found by the side of a dual carriageway in Maidenhead has been taken into care by social services.
The 13-year-old was discovered by BT phone engineer Bill Canning on Sunday as he fixed a phone cabinet on the southbound A404 slip road coming off the Bath Road near the Thicket Roundabout.
The father-of-two, who took the youngster to Maidenhead police station, said the boy smelled of oil and begged him for food and drink.
He spoke little English but told him he was called Mokhtar and was 13-years-old.
Mr Canning, from Bracknell, said: "I was half expecting it to be a wheeze. I don't know whether he just came out of a home or was stowed away on a lorry. I just don't know."
A police spokesperson said the boy was taken into the care of Bracknell social services on Sunday evening. He has since been transferred to Wokingham social services.
