Hospital managers under fire from council panel

11:54am Fri 5th Sep 08:: written by Francis Batt

Shocked hospital managers were left bemused and shaken on Tuesday after angry councillors launched into them at an important health meeting.

It followed a two hour presentation by leading managers from Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, Heatherwood in Ascot and the county's mental health trust, in which they told how patients' dignity is a top priority.

They told of plans for ward matrons to oversee patients' comfort and a new system called Red Tray, which would ensure patients were allowed time to eat their meals without interruption with their intake of food and water carefully monitored.
They also revealed that menus have been improved and wards upgraded to make them brighter and more pleasant.

But they got an icy response from the panel.

Chairman, Cllr Simon Meadowcroft (Con, Clewer South), who is a GP, branded the NHS a 'laughing stock', adding: "We have heard your warm words but they have no substance."

Sheila Holmes, from patient support group LINk, who sits on the panel, added: "I have been a patient at Heatherwood and I'm convinced we have a cultural problem. Nobody asked how I was or did I enjoy the meal. Common politeness seems to have gone out of the window."

Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals NHS Trust chief executive Colin Hayton hit back.
"I see all the complaints and I also see the congratulations. You may call the NHS a fiasco, others take a different view. I spoke to one gentlemen who said he felt like he had stayed in a private hospital."

Philippa Slinger, chief executive for the Berkshire Healthcare Foundation Trust - the county's mental health service - said: "It is a difficult issue and we should acknowledge that, not just sit here hurling stuff at each other."
