Halt on expansion for youth home

Terrorised neighbours have won their fight to block the expansion of a controversial young peoples' hostel which became a notorious trouble spot over a seven year period.

The A2 Housing Group - which specialises in affordable housing - agreed this week to withdraw plans to rebuild and expand Admel House in Clarence Road, Windsor, after a personal plea by ward councillors Catherine Bursnall (pictured), who is also deputy mayor, Sue Evans and Elizabeth Barton.

Worried residents took advantage of an open day at Admel House on Thursday last week to make their feelings known.

One resident spoke of having been fired at by an airgun from a window in the house a year ago as she walked up Vansittart Road with her small daughter and dog. Others have complained of intimidation by youths living at the hostel, which is occupied by young care leavers from 16-24 years old and run by the charity Look Ahead.

A spokesman for A2 said that a complete redesign of the whole project was now being considered, adding: "This is while we take time to consider the views of the local community. We would like to reassure all our neighbours that we will keep them informed of our future plans."
