Speed cuts on nearly 50 village roads
7:25am Fri 5th Sep 08:: written by Gareth McPherson and Dan Darlington
Sweeping changes to driving speeds in South Bucks have been implemented by Bucks County Council following a public consultation.
About 50 village through-roads and windy rural lanes with a national speed limit now carry limits as low as 30mph after a drastic overhaul by the council.
Cllr Val Letheren, cabinet member for transportation, approved dozens of new limits this summer in Burnham, Taplow, Dorney, Little Marlow, Bourne End and Wooburn Common, which came into force on Monday, September 1.
Pat Francis, senior transportation technician at Bucks County Council, said: "The majority of the changes are to road speed limits through communities to improve the quality of life of residents who live there, as well as for safety reasons."

- We live in Marsh lane and are delighted to see the speed limit change from national to 30 mph. however, you can watch day and night and you wont see many cars drivng below 50 or 60 mph. I think a bit of real enforcement is needed to make people realise it is a speed restriction now and they must slow down.Whats worse is that if you stick to 30 you get terrible intimidation from someone who has not looked at new signs and still thinks they can race along as though they are on the moterway.
- As residents of Hitcham Lane we welcome the change. There is a sign to inform drivers of the new limit but few motorists seem to notice it. Cyclists and pedestrians use Hitcham Lane which has no pavement, presumably one reason the lower limit was approved. Some kind of enforcement or a means to slow drivers, such as a speed bump, could help until motorists realise there has been a change.
- I have not seen any signs throughout wooburn common and through littleworth common that state the changes of speed limits, i think this is one of the reasons why many drivers still break the limit as they are unaware of the speed changes. My family and I use these roads regullaly and none of us had noticed the changes until I read them here.
- Delighted at new speed reductions although many people are still ignoring restrictions down Holtspur Hill into Wooburn Green. Perhaps the addition of a static camera or two would help to slow traffic on approach to Wooburn from the Beaconsfield direction.
- I objected to all these speed limit reductions for a host of reasons, one of which was that they bring ALL speed limits (and the law generally) into disrepute. It seems everyone agrees with that part! Remember that most of these 'speeding drivers' are ..... us. We try to be careful, responsible safe drivers but faced with daft laws that don't improve safety, it's difficult (and pointless) to comply. Remember the 1st to be caught by cameras are often those that campaigned for them!
