Brave shopkeeper laughed in the face of raiders

9:32am Fri 12th Mar 10:: written by John Balson

A hero shopkeeper has told how he fought off two hammer-wielding robbers in Pinkneys Green on Wednesday.

Balkar Singh, 28 - known locally as Sunny - says he was attacked at about 7.30pm in the Best-One Express convenience store in Hampden Road.

However, instead of being filled with fear, the trained martial-artist laughed in the faces of the raiders and told the pair to go home.

One of the balaclava-clad robbers tried to grab the cash register sparking a scuffle which eventually spilled out into the street. Mr Singh said the ordeal ended with the two men running away empty-handed. Mr Singh then called the police.

The shopkeeper said: "Money is hard to come by, especially with the recession, so I'm not just going to let two goons walk in here and take it from me."
